Fishing at Montcoffer

Fishing at Banff Country Estate

Love fishing?

The Montcoffer Beat is where you want to be. Located on the Lower River Deveron, it offers magical fishing with seclusion and tranquillity in an area of real natural beauty.

The fishing is ideal to be booked with the Estates self-catering accommodation Craig Alvah Lodge and Craig Cottage which are both literally a stone’s throw away, being situated above the famous gorge.

River Deveron

The River Deveron is a prolific salmon river. It’s regarded as one of the best salmon rivers in Scotland and also a very fine trout river. Renowned for its back end run of big fish.

Our Montcoffer Beat which is a prime beat extends for almost a mile long and offers easily accessible double bank fishing. This is the second beat in from the sea, with eight pools and a mixture of slow and fast water..we have an excellent Ghillie from May to the season’s end in October.

All pools are good fly water whilst spinning is allowed. The pools offer plenty of challenge for experienced anglers. Novices will appreciate the Gibb and Gorge which can be spun to as it’s a tricky pool for the fly.

The Gorge is a spectacular holding pool which holds fish when the river is low. The gorge pool finishes at the Bridge of Alvah and is 40-50 feet deep at that point. The gorge fishing hut sits high above the water, in good conditions the fish can be seen entering the gorge from here. The hut offers all facilities, a wonderful place for a dram.

The glide pool goes around the corner from the gorge and shallows up where the fish will often wait until the river rises or darkness comes before moving through.

The ash pool, the island stream, Craig pool and glide, the wires and new pool all pool with a real chance of a fish. No dead water.

If you’re new to the area, you’ll be intrigued to know the Deveron flows through one of Scotland’s least explored areas. The river flows from the Cabrach plateau and finishes down at the Moray Firth coast.
